Option 2: Retain the current 80km/h speed limit, do not change speed limit
|
| Please tell us why? |
As a tanker driver for Fonterra, I travel through this area constantly, both day and night. In my opinion, the speed limit should remain the same.
One reason is that the width of the road is similar to — or even wider than — Wairere Drive. Safety concerns would therefore be comparable to the section near Burger King and the Pukete Road intersection, which is also a busy area with similar road width and pedestrian activity. Another point is that this stretch of road has been operating as an 80 km/h zone for years and traffic has continued to flow well. If the current setup is functioning effectively, it raises the question of why it should be changed simply for the sake of change. While the Te Awa Lakes development will bring more activity in the coming years, the situation will likely be similar to the level of traffic already seen along Wairere Drive. The pedestrian footpath is also wide and set well back from the roadway, which provides a reasonable level of separation from traffic. If a reduction in speed were considered necessary, a limit of 70 km/h would seem more reasonable than reducing it to 60 km/h. Overall, lowering the speed limit is unlikely to have the intended effect. Drivers tend to travel at speeds that feel appropriate for the road conditions, and many will likely continue driving at the speed that currently feels comfortable for that stretch of road. Reducing the limit further may simply create frustration without delivering meaningful safety benefits. |
| Do you think any other physical changes are required to support the proposed speed limit change? |
If speed limit is kept the same maybe putting in barriers on the sides of the road to keep pedestrians seperate from the road.
