Which option do you prefer?
Option 2: Retain the current 80km/h speed limit, do not change speed limit
Please tell us why?
I do not support the proposed reduction of the speed limit from 80 km/h to 60 km/h on this section of Te Rapa Road. This corridor functions as an important arterial route connecting directly with State Highway 1C and supports significant commuter and freight traffic. Lowering the speed limit risks creating bottlenecks and reducing traffic flow efficiency beyond this short 460-metre section, particularly during peak travel times.
The required signalised pedestrian crossing already provides a controlled and effective safety measure for pedestrians. It is also important to consider fairness for existing road users who rely on this route for longer-distance commuting and have made travel and work arrangements based on its current function as a higher-speed arterial corridor.
Road-network performance should not be reduced to accommodate a new subdivision when appropriate safety infrastructure is already being installed.
Do you think any other physical changes are required to support the proposed speed limit change?
Rather than reducing the speed limit along this section of Te Rapa Road, consideration could be given to targeted intersection-based safety improvements such as signalised roundabouts or other controlled traffic-management treatments near key crossing points and access areas. These types of measures can regulate vehicle speeds where needed while preserving the important arterial function of the corridor.
Additional corridor-wide traffic-calming measures designed to support a lower speed environment would not be appropriate on a strategic connector route. A targeted infrastructure approach provides a more balanced solution by improving pedestrian safety while maintaining efficient movement for commuters and freight users and reducing the risk of unnecessary congestion along this route
