I moved to Hamilton in 2002. As an 17 yr old one of the highlight of our weekend was to go to Frankton markets - not just for the delicious street food, but for the unique local items that were produced by local artists. I still have a maorumite Tshirt (I bought 3 knowing I probably wouldn't see this again and have one prestige in storage), I bought hand painted canvas of Tui and Hamilton landscapes for Xmas presents one year - my family members still have them hanging in their houses.
It's so sad that since the new apartments Hamilton council has driven our market into the ground through their bylaws. Night market is shit - who wants crappy smelly food under a carpark roof- cramped and quality of food shit. I think you can do more than the proposed amendments and give incentives for sole trading businesses to encourage quality local trade to return - pay them what you would charge for them to occupy a space at markets - but instead you have "the poor traders (Frankton) and the rich (farmers market). I miss the spirit of Frankton market - shopping for unique gifts, buying high quality authentic street food, and listening to local talent. |
