Hamilton City Council is calling for passionate young people to apply for the 2026 Youth Council initiative, with applications opening on Monday 2 February.

The Youth Council will bring together up to 12 rangatahi aged 16 – 24 who live, work, or study in Hamilton Kirikiriroa. Members will meet monthly from late March to late November and will help shape Council’s thinking on issues that matter to young people. No previous experience is needed, just a genuine interest in representing your age group and contributing to your community.

Hamilton Mayor Tim Macindoe said the Youth Council initiative is an exciting opportunity for young people to step forward and make a difference.

“Hamilton is one of the youngest cities in the country, and it’s vital our rangatahi have a say in its future. This initiative gives them a direct and democratic way to contribute to the decisions shaping their city,” said Mayor Macindoe.

The Youth Council is a key action from the Rangatahi Action Plan 2025 – 28, which was developed with input from thousands of young people across Hamilton.

Members will help monitor progress on the plan and provide youth perspectives on Council projects and decisions.

Mayor Macindoe said the initiative reflects Council’s commitment to listening to young people.

“We want Hamilton to be a place where rangatahi/youth feel heard, valued, and confident about their future. If we want a city that works for the next generation, we must build it with them, not for them. This is a practical way to help make that happen,” said Mayor Macindoe.

Applications are open from Monday 2 February to Friday 27 February 2026.
