Hamilton City Council is getting behind a national competition that encourages people to clean up their act.

WasteMINZ (Waste Management Institute of New Zealand) has launched its Rinse, Recycle, Repeat competition aimed to encourage people to get into the habit of rinsing their tins, jars, and bottles before they go into the recycling bin.

Dirty recycling, also known as contamination, can cause an entire truck load of recycling to be sent to landfill.

And with a staggering 20% of dirty recycling sent to landfill nationwide, Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate said the competition is a great reminder of best practise.

“We love our environment, and we are all committed to protecting it for future generations. One way we can all get involved is to rinse your recycling so it’s clean before it goes into your recycling bin.

“Get the whole family or household into it and make it a habitual task – just remember rinse, recycle, repeat, it’s easy and takes no time at all,” she said.

The nationwide campaign encourages groups or individuals to upload a video to their personal social media accounts, showing how they rinse their recycling before it goes into the recycling bin. They then need to tag #rinserecyclerepeat to ensure it gets entered.

The competition runs for four weeks from 11 October – 5 November. The winner will be decided by a judging panel and will receive $25,000. Click here for WasteMINZ’ terms and conditions of entry.
