As traffic eases over the summer, Hamilton City Council is making big investments in our road and water networks.

Crews across the city are replacing ageing water and wastewater pipes, resealing 32km of roads, and making our roads safer with pedestrian crossings near schools and intersection upgrades.

“This summer marks one of our largest investments in road maintenance in recent years and we’re doing everything we can to minimise disruption, including coordinating road maintenance with water infrastructure upgrades,” said Hamilton City Council’s Unit Director – Operate and Maintain, Tania Hermann.

“We’re focusing on what’s important. Resurfacing our roads creates smoother driving surfaces and reduces the risks of potholes, while replacing old pipes keeps drinking water safe and ensures wastewater is transported safely to our treatment plants.”

“We also have several transport improvements, including signalised crossings near schools and intersection improvements, which will deliver significant long-term benefits for the community,” said Hermann.

The construction season runs from October through to March, timed to take advantage of daylight saving, warmer weather, and reduced traffic volumes.

“We know roadworks can be disruptive, which is why we schedule the bulk of our works for summer when there are fewer vehicles on the road and less weather delays.”

With multiple projects underway, people should take extra care around worksites. Road cones indicate that a site is either being prepared, undergoing active construction, or nearing completion. Cones are essential for maintaining safety for road users, pedestrians, and crews while improvements are made.

“Please be kind to our road workers and follow their instructions, so everyone can get home safe.”

While some on-street parking may be temporarily affected, businesses remain open throughout the construction period. Hermann encourages residents and visitors to shop local, even if it's less convenient than usual.

“Please keep showing up and supporting our businesses. They really appreciate it.”
