Hamilton’s rubbish and recycling collections remain the same on Auckland Anniversary Day (Monday 26 January) and Waitangi Day (Friday 6 February).
“If your collection day falls on a public holiday, put your bins out by 7am as usual,” said Hamilton City Council’s Head of Resource Recovery, Sarah Wilson. “If you’re heading away or hoping for a sleep‑in over the long weekend, pop them out the night before so they aren’t missed.”
With people at home more during school holidays and public holidays, rubbish can easily increase. Using the food scraps bin, yellow recycling bin, and glass crate is an easy way for each household to reduce their waste.
Here are some ways you can master recycling:
- rinse items like cans and bottles
- remove caps from bottles and spray bottles
- remove food residue from cardboard food packaging (like pizza boxes).
“If you're unsure whether an item can be recycled, type it into the bin sorter tool on our website. The tool will tell you which bin the item belongs in,” said Wilson.
For those looking to reuse, recycle, or dispose on Auckland Anniversary or Waitangi Day, below are the facilities’ public holiday operating hours:
Lincoln Street Resource Recovery Centre: 9am – 4pm
Habitat for Humanity ReUse store: 9am – 4pm
Hamilton Organics Centre: 8am – 5pm
