The next big quake could really catch you short.

Earthquakes can happen any time, even when you’re on the loo and drop, cover, hold isn’t really an option.

  • If you’re seated, a good idea is to adopt the airline crash brace position – leaning forward with hands over head.
  • If you’re standing drop, cover, hold if appropriate or get in a door frame.

Participating in the big Civil Defence ShakeOut exercise at 9.30am on Thursday 18 October is a good way to prepare – you’ll be expected to react as if a big quake has hit at that time.

Hamilton City Council has signed up as an organisation.
