Nominations are now open for Hamilton City Council’s East Ward Councillor following the passing of Councillor Margaret Forsyth.

To stand for election, candidates must be:

  • a New Zealand citizen (by birth or naturalisation ceremony); and
  • enrolled as a Parliamentary elector (anywhere in New Zealand); and
  • nominated by two electors whose names appear on the electoral roll within the respective ward the candidate is standing for.

The Council’s Governance Manager and Deputy Electoral Officer, Becca Brooke, advises people thinking about standing to thoroughly research what the role is responsible for.

“A good place to start is the Candidate Information Handbook, as well as attending Council meetings or watching them on livestream,” says Mrs Brooke.

“It would also pay to take a look at Council’s strategic documents and recent feedback from our Long-Term Plan consultation which is set to get adopted at the end of June.”

If you are embarking on a campaign, it’s also important to be aware of the rules around election signssocial media and how much you can spend.”

The Council has relaunched it’s elections website, yourcityelections.co.nz, so would-be candidates and voters have easy access to all the information they need.

Nomination forms can be found at yourcityelections.co.nz/stand, at the Council Office, or by phoning 0800 922 822.

Nominations close at 12pm on Tuesday 22 June 2021.
