Work to repair the Celebrating Age Centre will begin next week.

The Hamilton City Council-owned community facility at the south end of Victoria Street has been closed over recent years due to issues with the roof, water tightness and pests.

The renewal of Celebrating Age Centre is part of Council’s commitment to look after its existing assets and will result in the return of more than 1000m2 of central city community facility space.

The work will see the building footprint retained, the roof strengthened, and improvements made to the fire, electrical and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to bring them up to modern building standards. It is expected to be complete in the second half of 2026.

Parks and Recreation Unit Director Maria Barrie said it’s great to see repairs commence at the centre

“The Celebrating Age Centre is an important asset for our city which has been missed by community groups during its closure. We’re looking forward to seeing the repairs complete and the centre reopened for community use next year.”

Once the renewal is complete, Age Concern will once again occupy part of the building. In early 2026, Council will be seeking Expressions of Interest from community and recreation groups interested in leasing other parts of the facility.
