Fresh and exciting digital content helps Nicola Campbell connect Hamilton City Council with the community every day.
She’s the friendly personality behind Council’s social media and digital channels.
In her role as Digital Communication Specialist, Nicola oversees Council’s LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook accounts. She also looks after the planning and production of videos and other visual content such as photographs and digital advertising.
It’s all part of sharing Council’s projects, news and stories with Hamiltonians.
By crafting engaging content that is easy for anyone to understand, Nicola takes the community on a journey with Council. Thanks to her social media expertise, information reaches a wider range of people and keeps them up to date with what’s happening in their neighbourhood.
“Councils are incredibly complex, and I love being able to help, inform and educate people. I hope they leave the interaction with a better opinion of Council and the work we do,” Nicola said.
Often the best way to showcase what Council does is by illustrating the huge variety of people doing that work.
“I love being able to show people the ‘behind the scenes’ of our organisation.
“We have an awesome variety of people and roles who are all leaders in their field. Our digital channels have become a place we can share some of the world-class work we’re doing.”
A career highlight has been the creation of Council’s Instagram page, which mainly features photos and videos taken by people living in or visiting our great river city. Nicola finds eye-catching pictures from iconic locations or hidden gems and – with permission – shares them through the platform.
“The idea behind that is to help build city pride and share some of the beautiful and unique places across Hamilton. It helps us to show how vibrant and diverse our city is.”
Another of Nicola’s highlights has been creating and sharing a powerful video for Pink Shirt Day 2020 which took a stand against cyber bullying. The video showed the Communication and Engagement Team reading abusive Facebook comments, and was highly praised for its anti-bullying message nationwide.
It was a project Nicola had thought about doing for a while and, once she put her mind to it, the video was filmed and created inhouse within 48 hours.
The supportive workplace culture, variety of work, and diverse career opportunities has made Council an amazing place to apply her skills. But the best part of Nicola’s role is undoubtedly the people she gets to work with.
Despite outdated stereotypes of local government, she believes most people will be surprised by how exciting and rewarding working for Council can be.
“You’ll find yourself involved in some awesome work you’d never imagine you’d do. It’s somewhere you can truly make an impact and help shape our city.”
“Give working for Council a go, it’s not what you’d expect.”
