Hamilton City Council is inviting the community to have their say on a proposed speed limit change for a 460m section of Te Rapa Road, between Hutchinson Road and State Highway 1C (Mangaharakeke Drive).

A new neighborhood, called Te Awa Lakes, is being developed at the northern end of the city. Stage one is now complete and includes around 80 homes, with up to 2500 homes planned over time. Families are expected to move in from mid-2026, increasing the number of people walking, cycling, and catching the bus in the area.

As part of the approved development, the Te Awa Lakes developer is required to install a signalised pedestrian crossing on Te Rapa Road at their cost. To support the installation of the crossing and provide a safer environment for the growing community, Council is considering whether the current 80km/h speed limit remains appropriate once the signalised crossing is in place, or if the speed limit should be reduced to 60km/h. They’re seeking public feedback before making a decision.

“Hamilton Kirikiriroa is the fastest growing city in New Zealand and changes are needed in areas where growth is occurring to ensure the city operates efficiently and is safe for everyone,” said Tania Hermann, Hamilton City Council’s Operate and Maintain Unit Director.”

“With more people living in and moving throughout the area, the nature of this road is changing. We’re considering adjusting the speed limit now, and want to hear the community’s views to help inform that decision,” said Hermann.

Public feedback will be presented to the Transport Subcommittee on 26 May 2026, where committee members will consider the public’s views before making a decision. If supported, the proposal will then require approval from the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

Public feedback is open from 26 February 2026 until 9 April 2026. Share your thoughts online at hamilton.govt.nz/haveyoursay or using a hardcopy form available at the Council building or Hamilton City Libraries.
